Recently, I engaged in two separate discussions with influential leaders whose teams need help finding the perfect balance between strategy and agility. The conversations made me think about how easy it is to veer off track and favor one over the other instead of harnessing the power of both to thrive in our ever-changing world.


Both leaders were committed to team growth, and we had great conversations exploring what they were seeing and the practicalities of keeping their teams on the right track. They wanted their teams to reach an ideal balance instead of swinging between extremes.


Some team members were too focused on implementing a set strategy, oblivious to changing circumstances. Meanwhile, others were caught up in endless churn, constantly reacting to unexpected challenges and lacking forward momentum.


Definitions and Functions


Strategy is all about developing a deliberate and integrated action plan to achieve specific goals within a given context. It clarifies desired outcomes, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. However, our approach becomes rigid and unchangeable when we become fixated on our strategy without considering the unpredictable nature of the world surrounding us.


Agility refers to the ability of an organization to swiftly adapt, innovate, and respond effectively to changes in conditions, customer needs, and internal dynamics. But, when it becomes the focus to the exclusion of a strong strategy, it creates a constantly shifting approach that makes it challenging to maintain momentum.


Navigating Opposing Forces through Balance


The best way forward is to recognize that strategy and agility are essential to success in our fast-paced world. Imagine them as magnetic poles, and we need to find the dynamic middle ground where we can harness the strengths of both while minimizing their pitfalls.


During my discussions with these leaders, we returned regularly to a relatable analogy - envisioning a distant mountain as our team's destination.


The mountain peak represents our intended outcomes, and our strategy is our map of the area from here to there. Agility is our mindset for encountering obstacles we might not have predicted. To reach the destination, we must balance strategy and agility.
